Fuzzy Holland Lop Bunnies: Fluffy Holland Lops and the Wool Gene

A fuzzy Holland Lop is a purebred Holland Lop that inherited two copies of a recessive wool gene, so it grows a soft coat of wool about 2 inches long instead of short rollback fur. Fuzzies are healthy, sweet pets, but they cannot be shown as Holland Lops and they need regular grooming.

What Makes a Fuzzy Holland Lop

The wool coat comes from a single recessive gene, often written as the "l" or long hair gene. A Holland Lop with one copy looks completely normal, with short, dense fur that rolls back into place when you stroke it the wrong way. A Holland Lop with two copies grows wool. Because the gene can hide for generations, two short coated parents can produce a fluffy Holland Lop kit, and roughly one in four kits from two carriers will be fuzzy.

The gene entered Holland Lop lines in the 1970s, when some American breeders crossed in French Angora while working on coat and broken color patterns. The crossing stopped, but the wool gene stayed in some lines. Breeders who liked the woolly kits went on to develop them into a separate breed, the American Fuzzy Lop.

Why a Fuzzy Holland Lop Cannot Be Shown

The ARBA Holland Lop standard calls for a short, dense, rollback coat. Wool is outside that standard, so a fuzzy Holland Lop is disqualified on the show table no matter how good its head, crown or body are. It cannot be shown as an American Fuzzy Lop either, since that is a different breed with its own pedigrees.

That makes fuzzies pet quality by definition, and that is fine. A fuzzy has the same compact build, the same 3 lb ideal weight under a 4 lb maximum, and the same temperament as its short coated littermates. If you have no interest in showing, a fuzzy Holland Lop is simply a Holland Lop in a sweater.

In practice the two can look almost identical. The difference matters if you want to show or breed. For a house pet, pick the individual rabbit you like. Our lop breed comparison covers the American Fuzzy Lop alongside the French and English Lops.

Grooming a Fluffy Holland Lop

Wool does not shed out cleanly like normal fur. Loose wool stays tangled in the coat, mats close to the skin, and gets swallowed when the rabbit grooms itself. Rabbits cannot vomit, so swallowed wool is a real risk for gut slowdown. Grooming is not optional.

  • Brush with a slicker brush and a wide tooth comb two or three times a week, and every day during a molt.
  • Check behind the ears, under the chin and around the tail, where mats form first.
  • Trim the wool around the vent to about half an inch so droppings do not stick.
  • Cut out mats with blunt tipped scissors, working a comb between the mat and the skin. Rabbit skin tears easily.
  • Keep hay intake high. Fiber is what keeps swallowed wool moving through.

Many pet owners keep their fuzzy trimmed to 1 to 1.5 inches, which cuts grooming time sharply. In hot weather a trim also helps the rabbit stay cool. Holland Lops are heat sensitive above about 80 F, and a full wool coat makes that worse, so keep a fuzzy in air conditioning through a Texas summer. Fuzzy Holland Lop Bunnies from Our Barn

We do not breed for fuzzies, and we do not have any fuzzy Holland Lops for sale right now. They turn up in some litters because a few of our pedigreed lines carry the wool gene, as many Holland Lop lines do. When one appears, it goes home as a pet quality kit with the same care as every other: handled daily, litter trained, and sent home at 8 weeks or older healthy, with a birth certificate, a care sheet, transition feed and a quick bunny care lesson at pickup.

If you specifically want a fuzzy Holland Lop, ask to join our waitlist and mention it. We cannot promise one will be born, but we will tell you when a litter produces one.

Holland Lion Lop and Other Fluffy Look Alikes

Listings for "Holland lion lop" bunnies usually mean a cross between a Holland Lop and a Lionhead, with a mane of longer fur around the head. That is a mix, not a fuzzy Holland Lop, and not an ARBA recognized breed. If a seller offers a fluffy Holland Lop, ask whether both parents are Holland Lops and ask to see the pedigree.

Questions buyers ask

Can two normal holland lops have a fuzzy baby?

Yes. If both parents carry one hidden copy of the wool gene, each kit has about a one in four chance of being fuzzy, even though both parents have normal short fur. That is why fuzzies seem to appear out of nowhere. A breeder only learns a rabbit is a carrier when a fuzzy kit turns up in one of its litters.

Is a fuzzy holland lop the same as an american fuzzy lop?

No. An American Fuzzy Lop is a separate ARBA breed, recognized in 1988, with its own standard and pedigrees. A fuzzy Holland Lop is a Holland Lop that happens to carry wool. The two look alike as pets, but a fuzzy from Holland Lop parents cannot be registered or shown as an American Fuzzy Lop.

When can you tell if a holland lop is fuzzy?

Usually around 3 to 4 weeks old. Fuzzy kits look slightly longer and softer in the coat than their littermates, and by 4 to 6 weeks the difference is clear, especially around the face and cheeks. Before 2 weeks it is very hard to tell, even for an experienced breeder.

Do fuzzy holland lops shed more?

They do not shed more in volume, but the shed wool tangles instead of falling away, so it mats quickly if you skip brushing. During a molt, which happens two to four times a year, plan on brushing daily for one to two weeks. Mats close to the skin should be cut out carefully, never pulled.
