How Big Do Holland Lops Get? Holland Lop Size and Weight
Holland Lops get to about 3 lbs when full grown, and the ARBA breed standard sets 4 lbs as the maximum for a senior rabbit. Most reach adult size around 6 months and finish filling out by 9 to 12 months, ending up roughly 8 to 10 inches long when sitting.
Holland Lop Full Grown Weight and Build
A full grown Holland Lop weighs about 3 lbs, and almost every healthy adult lands between 2 lbs 8 oz and 4 lbs. The American Rabbit Breeders Association, which recognized the breed in 1979, lists 3 lbs as the ideal senior weight and 4 lbs as the maximum. A senior over 4 lbs is disqualified from showing, though it can be a perfectly healthy pet.
Weight only tells part of the story. Holland Lops are short and thick, with a deep chest, a wide head and a body that looks almost as tall as it is long. Show judges look for that short, heavy boned build more than the number on the scale. Sitting in a loaf, an adult is roughly 8 to 10 inches from nose to tail and about 6 inches tall at the shoulder. The ears hang down beside the face, so the head looks bigger than you would expect on a 3 lb rabbit.
Adult Holland Lop measurements at a glance
If you only want the quick answer to how big are Holland Lops, here it is for an adult Holland Lop in good condition: 2 lbs 8 oz to 4 lbs, 8 to 10 inches long in a loaf, about 6 inches tall at the shoulder, with ears that reach just past the jaw. Holland Lop adults look heavier than they are because of the dense coat and wide head. Picking one up for the first time, most buyers are surprised how light a Holland Lop adult feels in the hands. For a Holland Lop size full grown estimate on a specific kit, the parents matter more than any chart, which we cover below.
From Kit to Full Grown Holland Lop Bunny: Weight Chart by Age
Holland Lop weight changes fast in the first 12 weeks and then slowly through the first year. This is the growth curve we expect in our barn. Individual kits vary with litter size and lines, so treat it as a range, not a pass or fail test. Does often finish a few ounces heavier than bucks.

A kit at the low end of the 8 week range is not automatically a "mini". Small kits from small litters often catch up by 4 months. If you are reading listings that promise a rabbit will stay under 2 lbs, our page on what people mean by a mini Holland Lop explains why that promise does not hold up.
How Big Do Holland Lop Rabbits Get at the Heavy End?
How big does a Holland Lop get when something goes wrong? We occasionally hear from owners whose Holland Lop weighs 5 lbs or more. There are three usual explanations. The first is extra weight from too many pellets and treats; most of those rabbits drop back to around 3 lbs 8 oz on a hay based diet. The second is mixed breeding: a cross with a Mini Lop, which runs 4.5 to 6.5 lbs, will often finish well above the Holland Lop range. The third is a long, rangy Holland Lop from lines that were not selected for type. That rabbit is still a Holland Lop, just a poor example of the standard.
How big can a Holland Lop get, judging by its parents?
The best predictor of how big your bunny will get is the size of its parents. Ask any breeder for the adult weights of the sire and dam. We can tell you the adult weights of the parents behind every kit we sell.
Holland Lop Size Comparison with Other Breeds
A full grown Holland Lop size comparison is the fastest way to picture the breed. Holland Lops are the smallest of the lop eared breeds recognized in the US. Here is how they compare with the breeds people most often confuse them with.
Breed
Adult weight
Body type
Netherland Dwarf
Up to 2 lbs 8 oz
Upright ears, very round
Holland Lop
Up to 4 lbs, ideal 3 lbs
Lop ears, short and thick
American Fuzzy Lop
Up to 4 lbs
Lop ears, wool coat
Mini Lop
4.5 to 6.5 lbs
Lop ears, longer and rounder
French Lop
10 lbs and up
Lop ears, giant breed
The Mini Lop is the comparison that confuses most buyers, because the name sounds smaller than "Holland Lop" even though the rabbit is not. A full grown Mini Lop can be close to twice the weight of a full grown Holland Lop.
What Holland Lop Rabbit Size Means for Your Setup
A 3 lb rabbit does not mean a small cage. Holland Lops are compact but active, and they need room for at least three or four full hops in a straight line, which works out to about 4 feet. Small size does make them easy to pick up, easy to travel with and inexpensive to feed: an adult eats a few tablespoons of pellets a day plus hay.
Size also affects health over time. A Holland Lop carrying an extra pound is carrying 30 percent more weight than its frame was built for, which strains the hocks and makes self grooming hard. Keeping your rabbit near its ideal weight is one of the simplest ways to protect its Holland Lop lifespan.
Common Mistakes When Judging Holland Lop Bunny Size
Most questions we get about how big do Holland Lop bunnies get come from owners who are worried their rabbit is either too small or too big. Usually it is one of these.
Judging adult size at 12 weeks. This is the leggy stage. Ears look long and the body looks thin. Wait until 6 months before deciding a rabbit is "too big".
Feeding a growing kit like an adult. Juniors need more protein and calories than adults. Cutting pellets too early to "keep them small" stunts muscle and bone, not genetics.
Trusting a seller's estimate without parent weights. A good breeder can tell you what the sire and dam weigh.
Calling fat "big boned". Use the spine and rib test from the FAQ below every month.
Our opinion: if you want a small Holland Lop, a well bred one at 3 lbs is the right answer, and a Holland Lop bunny full grown at that weight is already the smallest lop eared rabbit you can buy. You do not need to chase a "mini" label to get a small bunny.
Questions buyers ask
When are holland lops full grown
Holland Lops are full grown in length and frame at about 6 months, which is also when ARBA considers them seniors for showing. They keep adding muscle and filling out through the chest and shoulders until 9 to 12 months, so a 6 month old may still gain a few ounces before settling at adult weight.
What is the average weight of a holland lop
The average weight of a Holland Lop adult is 3 to 3.5 lbs. The ARBA standard calls 3 lbs ideal and disqualifies seniors over 4 lbs from the show table. Pet Holland Lops often sit a little heavier than show rabbits, and anything from 2 lbs 8 oz to 4 lbs is normal if the rabbit is lean and active.
Holland lop weight kg
In kilograms, a full grown Holland Lop weighs about 1.1 to 1.8 kg. The ARBA ideal of 3 lbs is roughly 1.36 kg, and the 4 lb senior maximum is about 1.8 kg. An 8 week old kit going to a new home usually weighs between 0.5 and 0.75 kg.
How big does a holland lop bunny get compared to a cat
A full grown Holland Lop bunny is much smaller than an average house cat. A typical cat weighs 8 to 10 lbs, while a Holland Lop weighs about 3 lbs and sits roughly 8 to 10 inches long. Picture a large loaf of bread with lop ears and you are close.
Is my holland lop overweight
Run your hand along the spine and over the ribs. You should feel each bump of the spine and the ribs under a thin cushion, without sharp edges and without having to press. If you cannot feel ribs, or a fat roll covers the dewlap and rump, your Holland Lop is likely overweight. Cut pellets and treats, not hay.
