Mini Holland Lop Rabbits and Miniature Holland Lop Bunnies

Mini Holland Lop rabbits are Holland Lops. There is no separate miniature version: the name is what many people call the Holland Lop itself, a dwarf breed with an ARBA maximum of 4 lbs. The Mini Lop is a different, larger breed that reaches about 6 lbs, so the two names point at two very different rabbits.

Is There Such a Thing as a Mini Holland Lop?

Not as a separate breed. The American Rabbit Breeders Association recognizes the Holland Lop, accepted in 1979, and that is the small lop people mean when they search for a mini Holland Lop, a miniature Holland Lop or a Holland mini lop. Breeders sometimes add "mini" in listings because it sells, and buyers add it because the rabbit is genuinely tiny. Either way, the rabbit you get is a Holland Lop.

So if a seller offers "mini Holland Lops" as if they are smaller than regular Holland Lops, ask what they mean. Sometimes it is harmless marketing. Sometimes it is a way to suggest a kit will stay smaller than the 4 lb standard, which nobody can promise. Our kits are Holland Lops, from pedigreed lines, and we can tell you about the lines behind every kit.

Mini Holland Lop Bunnies vs the Larger Mini Lop Breed

This is where the name causes real trouble. The Mini Lop is its own ARBA breed, recognized in 1980, with a maximum of 6.5 lbs and an ideal around 5.5 to 6 lbs. It is roughly double the weight of a typical Holland Lop. A buyer who wanted a pocket sized rabbit and brings home a Mini Lop ends up with a medium rabbit that needs a larger pen and more hay than they planned for.

We go through the differences point by point, including head shape, ear carriage and temperament, in our Mini Lop vs Holland Lop comparison. The short version: if you want the smallest lop eared breed, you want a Holland Lop.

How Big Does a Mini Holland Lop Bunny Get?

The ARBA standard sets the Holland Lop's maximum senior weight at 4 lbs, with 3 lbs as the ideal. In our barn, most adults land between about 2 lbs 12 oz and 3 lbs 12 oz. Here is how a typical kit grows:

AgeTypical weightWhat you will notice
Birth1.5 to 2 ozHairless, eyes sealed, small enough to fit in the palm of a hand
8 weeks (go home age)1 lb to 1 lb 12 ozFully weaned, eating hay and pellets, ears dropping or dropped
4 months2 to 2 lbs 12 ozTeenage phase, more energy, hormones begin
6 months2 lbs 8 oz to 3 lbs 8 ozNear adult size, ready to spay or neuter
8 to 10 monthsAbout 3 lbs, 4 lbs maximumFull grown mini Holland Lop, chest and shoulders filled out

For a 3 lb rabbit we recommend at least a 36 by 36 inch pen as the base, with daily free roam time of a few hours. Small does not mean a small cage. Holland Lops sprint and binky as hard as any rabbit. More on growth curves and adult build is on our Holland Lop size guide.

Why a Miniature Holland Lop Looks So Small

Holland Lops were developed in the Netherlands by Adriaan de Cock, who crossed the large French Lop with the Netherland Dwarf starting around 1949 and later brought in English Lop to fix the ear carriage. The dwarf gene from the Netherland Dwarf side is what keeps the breed compact. The look the standard asks for:

  • A short, wide, deep body, described as a "massive" build for its size
  • A bold, round head set close to the shoulders, with almost no visible neck
  • A thick crown at the top of the head where the ears fold down
  • Ears that hang close to the cheeks, with the openings turned toward the head
  • Short, thick legs

That round, baby faced shape is why people reach for the word mini. A Mini Lop has a longer face, a longer body and a narrower crown.

Mini Holland Lop Bunnies for Sale Near Me: Our Barn and Flight Delivery

We raise a few litters each season from a small herd, so every kit is handled daily from birth. They are litter trained before they leave, grow up hearing everyday household noise like a vacuum and a television, and go home at 8 weeks or older. Each one is healthy at the time of sale and goes home with a birth certificate, a care sheet, transition feed and a quick bunny care lesson at pickup.

Pricing starts at $300 for pet quality. You can pick up at our Texas rabbitry by appointment, or we fly in the cabin with your bunny to your nearest major airport for quoted per trip based on the airport and airfare. Available kits are listed below. If none fit, our Holland Lop price page explains what each grade includes so you know what to ask for on the waitlist.

A search for mini Holland Lop bunnies for sale near me rarely turns up a breeder in your own town with a litter ready the same month. That is why we fly the bunny to you rather than ship it. Whether a listing says mini Holland Lop for sale, miniature Holland Lop for sale or miniature Holland Lop bunnies for sale, ask the same three questions: how old is the kit today, what did the parents weigh as adults, and can I see the pedigree? Any mini Holland Lop bunny for sale from us comes with written answers to all three.

Mini Rex Holland Lop Mix and Other Crosses

The mini Rex Holland Lop mix is the cross we are asked about most. A mini Rex and Holland Lop mix can be a sweet pet, but it is a crossbred rabbit: ears may stand, half lop or fall, and the coat can come out plush rex, normal rollback or a patchy mix of both. The Mini Rex standard runs 3.5 to 4.5 lbs, so a cross can grow heavier than a typical Holland Lop. If a seller lists mini Holland Lop rabbits for sale and the kits have velvety, short fur that feels like plush, ask about the parents before you assume you are getting a purebred.

Mistakes We See with Mini Holland Lop Buyers

The first is choosing purely on the smallest kit in a litter. The runt is often small because it nursed less, not because it carries better dwarf genetics, and it can grow to the same size as its siblings or have more health trouble early. Ask about the parents' weights instead.

The second is buying a "mini Holland Lop" from a pet store or online listing without a pedigree. Without parents on paper there is no way to know whether you have a Holland Lop, a Mini Lop or a mix. The third is assuming tiny means fragile and keeping the rabbit in a small cage for safety. A Holland Lop needs room to run every day, and a cramped rabbit tends to grow bored, chew the bars and gain weight.

Questions buyers ask

Are mini lops and holland lops the same?

No. The Mini Lop and the Holland Lop are separate ARBA breeds. The Holland Lop has a 4 lb maximum and an ideal of 3 lbs, while the Mini Lop can reach 6.5 lbs. The confusion comes from people calling Holland Lops mini Holland Lops, which is a nickname for the small breed, not a third breed.

How big do mini holland lops get?

A mini Holland Lop is a Holland Lop, so a full grown adult weighs about 3 lbs, with 4 lbs as the ARBA show maximum. Most of our adults sit between 2 lbs 12 oz and 3 lbs 12 oz. They reach close to full size by 6 months and fill out through the chest and shoulders until around 8 to 10 months.

How long do mini holland lops live?

Holland Lops kept indoors with a hay based diet commonly live 7 to 12 years, and some pass that. Spaying or neutering, steady hay intake and regular checks of the teeth make the biggest difference. Small size does not shorten their life the way it does in some dog breeds.

Are mini lops bigger than holland lops?

Yes, noticeably. An adult Mini Lop typically weighs about 5.5 to 6 lbs, roughly twice a typical Holland Lop. It has a longer, heavier body and a larger head. Side by side, a Holland Lop looks compact and round, while a Mini Lop looks like a medium sized rabbit.

Is a holland lop mini rex mix a mini holland lop?

No. A Holland Lop and Mini Rex mix is a crossbred rabbit, and it may have upright, half lop or fully lopped ears plus a short velvety rex coat. It can be a lovely pet, but it is not a Holland Lop and cannot be shown as one. We breed purebred Holland Lops only.
